A Joint Standing Committee on Migration has presented the government with its final report, which includes 18 key recommendations.

It urges the government to leverage the potential of skilled migrants and international students to aid Australia’s economic recovery following the coronavirus outbreak. The Joint Standing Committee on Migration recommends significant changes to the government’s immigration policies in order to attract international students and temporary migrants. Students who excel academically should have a better chance of obtaining permanent residency the report recommends and the report also recommends government could consider longer temporary graduate visas of three years to provide students the time and flexibility to find work.

According to experts, it will primarily benefit Indian students and skilled migrants.
