Over the holiday season, up to 100 individuals held in immigration detention were freed, a move that was applauded by activists who urged Labor to speed its commitment to release those who pose a low risk to the public.
Since December 23, lawyers for asylum seekers and those whose visas were revoked under the character provisions of the Migration Act have stated that scores have been released daily from detention sites such as Villawood in Sydney and Melbourne Immigration Transit Accommodation in Broadmeadows.
