Since the border closed in March 2020, more than 500,000 temporary migrants have left Australia, increasing skills shortages and jeopardizing the survival of enterprises that rely on skilled migrants. Under a strategy presented to accelerate the nation’s post-pandemic recovery, skilled workers should be given a road to permanent residency in Australia, including a fast-tracked alternative for talented international students. The Migration Committee of the Federal Parliament, which has a Coalition majority, has concluded that Australia must do more to remain competitive in the global talent war as the United States, Canada, and the United Kingdom move to offer workers and students more generous residency pathways and work rights
