Children of Australian citizens and permanent residents can sponsor one or both parents onshore or offshore under a parent or contributory parent visa.
These two parent categories provide eligible parents of settled Australian citizens or settled Australian permanent residents with the choice of three migration pathways to Australia.
Depending on their circumstances, applicants may apply for an offshore or onshore visa. Within the Family Stream Migration Program, a limited number of visa places are allocated to parent migration. Parents can expect to wait approximately fifteen years for the application to be finalized. More places are allocated to contributory parent category visas: applicants in this category generally can expect their applications to be finalized in under two years.

This temporary visa lets a parent of a settled Australian citizen, Australian permanent resident or eligible New Zealand citizen stay temporarily in Australia.
This visa allows you to
- live in Australia for up to 2 years
- work and study in Australia (you will not receive government support)
- apply for a permanent Contributory Parent visa (subclass 143) visa
In order to get the approval you must
- be sponsored by an eligible child who is a settled Australian citizen, Australian Permanent resident or Eligible New Zealand citizen
- meet the balance-of-family test
- meet all visa conditions and follow Australian law
- not have already applied for or hold a Sponsored Parent (Temporary) (Subclass 870) visa when applying for this visa
You will also be able to include a family
- You can include members of the family unit in your application when you apply.
- You will be required to include details of all your family members, whether they are migrating or not, when you fill out the application form.
- If you have a partner, include their details in your application even if they are not applying for the visa with you.

This visa allows you to
- stay in Australia as a permanent resident
- sponsor eligible family members to come to Australia
- if eligible, apply for Australian citizenship

- be old enough to receive the age pension in Australia
- not have already applied for or hold a Sponsored Parent (Temporary) (Subclass 870) visa when applying for this visa

- You can include members of the family unit in your application when you apply. You are required to include details of all your family members in your application form whether they are migrating or not.
- If you have a partner, include their details in your application even if they are not applying for the visa with you.

This temporary visa lets a parent of an Australian citizen, Australian permanent resident or eligible New Zealand citizen visit Australia for up to 3 or 5 years.
This visa allows you to
- visit Australia for up to 3 or 5 years per visa
- apply for further visas to visit up to a maximum period in Australia of 10 years
- but does not allow to work in Australia
In order to get the approval you must
- have an approved Parent Sponsor before you can lodge an application for this visa
- apply online for this visa
- lodge your visa application within 6 months of the sponsorship approval, or 60 days if you are given Permission to Apply in Australia
With this visa you can maximum stay for a cumulative maximum 10 year period. Then you need to change into another visa.
